Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about Money Market Funds or how our platform works? Here are answers to the most common queries from Kenyan investors.

A Money Market Fund (MMF) is a type of unit trust that invests in short-term, low-risk financial instruments such as Treasury Bills, commercial paper, and fixed deposits. In Kenya, MMFs are regulated by the Capital Markets Authority (CMA) and offer investors a way to earn competitive returns on their cash while maintaining high liquidity. Unlike a savings account, MMFs pool your money with other investors to access better interest rates from institutional-grade investments. You can typically withdraw your funds within 24 to 48 hours, making them an ideal vehicle for parking short-term cash.
No. Money Market Hub Kenya is an independent aggregator and data analytics platform. We do not hold, manage, or invest your money. Our role is to provide transparent, objective data that helps you compare the various Money Market Funds available in Kenya and make informed investment decisions. When you decide to invest, you will be directed to the respective fund manager’s platform to complete your investment. Think of us as a comparison tool — similar to how a price comparison site works, but for financial yields and fund features.
Our yield data is updated daily, typically by 5:00 PM East Africa Time (EAT) on every business day. We source data directly from fund managers and the Capital Markets Authority to ensure accuracy. On weekends and public holidays, the data reflects the most recent business day’s yields. Historical performance data and trend charts are also refreshed daily so you always have access to the most current information when making investment decisions.
Effective Annual Yield (EAY) represents the actual annualised return on your investment after accounting for the compounding of interest. Unlike the simple annual rate, EAY factors in how frequently interest is compounded — daily, monthly, or quarterly — giving you a more accurate picture of your true returns. For example, a fund with a 15% EAY compounded daily will earn you more than a fund with a 15% simple annual rate. This is why EAY is the standard metric we use to compare funds on our platform — it levels the playing field and reveals the real earning potential of each fund.
No, Money Market Fund returns are not guaranteed. Yields fluctuate based on market conditions, particularly the Central Bank of Kenya’s benchmark interest rate and the performance of the underlying short-term securities. However, MMFs are considered one of the lowest-risk investment vehicles available because they invest in high-quality, short-term instruments. Capital preservation is a core objective, and historical default rates for regulated Kenyan MMFs are extremely low. It is important to remember that past performance does not guarantee future results, and you should always consider your risk tolerance before investing.
The Total Expense Ratio (TER) represents the annual fees charged by the fund manager as a percentage of the fund’s total assets. These fees cover management, administration, custody, and audit costs. A higher TER means more of your returns are consumed by fees, reducing your net earnings. For instance, if two funds both offer a 15% gross yield, but one has a TER of 0.75% and the other 1.20%, the first fund delivers a higher net return. We display TER prominently on our platform because fee transparency is essential for making truly informed investment decisions.
Getting started is straightforward. First, use our platform to compare funds and identify one that meets your return expectations and minimum investment budget. Then, visit the fund manager’s website or office to open an account — you will typically need your Kenyan ID, a passport photo, and a KRA PIN certificate. Once your account is verified, you can make your initial deposit via M-Pesa, bank transfer, or cheque. Most funds allow you to top up and withdraw at any time. Our blog also features detailed step-by-step guides for each major fund manager to help you through the process.
